As one of the most popular games of all time, there are literally hundreds of variations to card games from around the world. These variations are impacted by the various cultures and way of life from the specific country or region wherein it was developed. But how did card games initially come about?
The success of several worldwide card game variations have a long period of history. But as to the specific time frame in history, that cannot be determined with certainty.
There is no European literature that would describe or indicate where and how card games started. To be specific, there is no evidence that card games were played before the 17th century except for some fragmentary references.
Today, there is between 1,000 to 10,000 unique variations to choose from. That does not even consider the specific variations for each country in various regions of the world since there are also worldwide card game variations for each game.
To give you an idea, it is best to examine various representatives for each side of the continent.
Since card games are often learned and played within circles of friends or families instead of online, you can expect some of the card games to be unique to a specific region only. This also contributes to more diversity when it comes to card games.
There are also international games that have developed local variations in other countries to make it unique.
In North America, specifically in the United States, the international 52-card pack is used for most card games. In most cases, they use only the single deck or a mixture of various decks at one time.
Poker is one card game variation that started in the US and that has gotten internationally popular as of late. Another card game known as Faro started off in the 19th century but is rarely played today.
Within the US, there are also several other local variations depending on which city or state it is played, namely Clabber in Indiana, Bourre in Louisiana, Tribello in Illinois, and Crazy Solo in Oregon.
Moving over to Europe, Britain and Spain, they have developed their own unique variations to the world's favorite past time. The standard deck of cards used in Spain consists of 48 cards, each representing the jack, king, and horse. In most Spanish card games, only 40 out of the 48 cards are often used. Some of the most popular Spanish card games include Brisca, Escoba, Tute, Podrida, Julepe, and Mus.
British card gamers, on the other hand, use the international 52 deck of cards (same as the US). Some of the classic card games like All Fours is still being played today in counties such as Lancashire and Yorkshire. Other popular card games include Euchre, Phat, Put, Ging, and Card Cricket, to name a few.
Wherever in the world you may be, you will certainly enjoy the unique experience offered by worldwide card game variations to make each opportunity to play cards fun and exciting. It is no wonder it has survived the test of time!
