Tableau The tableau is shaped by giving out twenty-eight cards in 7 stacks in this way: The first stack is only 1 card; the 2nd stack has 2 cards, etc, up to 7 cards in the final stack. The top card of every stack is face up while all the other cards are facing downwards.
To setup the tableau, you have to deal 7 cards across from the left to the right. When starting to deal, the first card is put face up and the other six are put facing downwards. For the second deal, 1 card is put face up on the 2nd stack, and 1 facing downwards on all the other stacks, etc.
Foundations The 4 A’s create the foundations. As they become accessible, all the aces have to be put to a row on top of the tableau. Cards in the proper suit are then put on the aces in series - the 2, then the 3, etc. - as they become accessible.
The Goal of Klondike To get the 4 suits put onto the foundations from A’s up to K’s.
To Build All movable cards can be put onto a card that is next higher in rank only if it’s of opposite color. For instance: A red 4 can be put on a black 5. If there is more than 1 card facing upwards on a tableau stack, all of the cards have to be moved as a series. For instance: the 4 of hearts, 5 of spades, and 6 of diamonds can be placed as a series onto the 7 of clubs or 7 of spades. Once there is no more face-up card left on a stack, the top card facing upwards is flipped over and becomes accessible.
Spaces in Klondike Only a K can fill an empty space in the layout.
The Stock Once the tableau is in place, the remainder of the deck creates the stock. You then flip over cards that are on top of the stock in sets of 3, and the first card of the 3 is available for placing on the tableau or, if possible, put on the foundation.
If a card is available for play, the card underneath it becomes accessible to play. If the turned up card can’t be played, the 1, 2, or 3 cards of the set are put face up on the waste pile, and the next set of 3 cards is flipped over. Once the stock is gone, the waste pile is flipped upside down to create the stock, and sets of 3 cards are again flipped over. This procedure is recurring until no additional plays are likely. The first card of the waste pile is continually accessible for play, since the next 3 cards of the stock have not been flipped over.
